If an Examiner finds that the claims in a single application point to multiple inventions, he will issue a Restriction Requirement, to choose one of the multiple inventions found for the current application. This can be issued at any time during the application process, up until a final office action.

Claims are single sentence descriptions of an invention that clearly establish the parameters and limits of what can infringe on a given patent. All non-provisional applications, including design applications, must have claims. There are two types of claims: independent and dependent. By default, each utility application allows for 3 independent claims and 20 claims total.
